Efter et sammenbrud indlogerer den fremtrædende komponist Gustav von Aschenbach sig på et luksushotel på Lidoen ud for Venedig. Her møder han den guddommelige, blonde Tadzio, der med sin på én gang engleagtigt rene og sensuelle udstråling synes at rumme et håb om frelse og forløsning. Aschenbach giver sig til at følge efter den unge mand i en stadigt stigende smertefuld betagelse.
