Anført af deres viljestærke mor flytter Rocco (Alain Delon) og hans fire brødre fra et landdistrikt i det sydlige Italien til Milano i nord i håbet om at opnå forbedrede livsvilkår. Det bliver en hård kamp for dem alle i den upersonlige storby. Handlingen udspiller sig især omkring den prostituerede Nadia (Annie Girardot), som både Rocco og hans bror Simone har et godt øje til. Luchino Visconti, en af ophavsmændene til den italienske neorealisme, har instrueret.
