Da en gæst på hotellet pludselig dør, overtager den udbrændte journalist David Locke (Jack Nicholson) hans identitet. Med den afdøde mands aftalekalender som guide rejser Locke rundt i Europa og Afrika og holder møder med farlige våbenhandlere og bliver forelsket i en forførende ung kvinde (Maria Schneider). Men hans spændende og nyfundne frihed er ikke uden omkostninger, og Locke indser lidt efter lidt, at han er ude på meget dybt vand. Jack Nicholson leverer en imponerende præstation. The Passenger vandt en Bodil i 1976 for Bedste europæiske film.
