Μια γυναικά κατηγορείται για φόνο όταν ο άντρας της εξαφανίζεται μυστηριωδώς και το ιστιοφόρο με το οποίο ταξίδευαν βρίσκεται «βαμμένο» στο αίμα. Τελικά οδηγείται στη φυλακή με μόνη «ψυχική» υποστήριξη το γιο της. Τα πράγματα όμως παίρνουν δραματική τροπή όταν ανακαλύπτει πως ο «νεκρός» άντρας της ζει και ότι όλα ήταν μια καλοσχεδιασμένη ίντριγκα με σκοπό να αποκτήσει την ασφάλεια ζωής των 2.000.000 δολαρίων. Με βάση ένα στοιχείο της Αμερικάνικης νομοθεσίας που ορίζει ότι δεν τιμωρείσαι για δεδικασμένο έγκλημα, ξεκινάει μια προσπάθεια να εντοπίσει και να σκοτώσει τον άντρα της. Μοναδικό εμπόδιο ο επιτηρητής της, που προσπαθεί να την αποτρέψει.
