Jauna mergina Ana (aktorė Emily Browning) po dešimties mėnesių sugrįžta namo iš psichiatrinės ligoninės, į kurią pakliuvo, nesugebėdama susitvarkyti su savo skausmu po tragiškos motinos mirties. Su gydytojų pagalba atgavusi dvasinę pusiausvyrą (tiesa, ji pati dėl to nėra visiškai tikra) mergina sugrįžta namo, tačiau čia pat patiria naują šoką. Pasirodo, jos tėvas (akt. Davidas Strathairnas) susižadėjo su buvusia motinos tarnaite Reičel (akt. Elizabeth Banks). Sukrėsta ir netikinti tuo, ką pamatė ir sužinojo, Ana nueina miegoti ir jau pačią pirmąją naktį ją aplanko mylimos motinos dvasia, norėdama perspėti dukterį apie šėtoniškus tarnaitės ketinimus. Ana ir pati įtarė, kad Reičel su jos tėvu susižadėjo ne iš meilės, tad kitą rytą viską atvirai papasakoja savo seseriai Aleks (akt. Arielle Kebbel) ir abi merginos pabando pasikalbėti su tėvu ir „atvesti jį į protą“.
