Veiksmas vyksta ateityje. Galaktiką valdo Imperatorius, atskiras planetas – kilmingos šeimos. Svarbiausia planeta – Arakis – iš pažiūros tik atšiauri ir nederlinga dykuma. Tačiau tik čia auga vertingiausias prieskonis Melanžas, išplečiantis sąmonės ribas, ilginantis gyvenimą, suteikiantis įvairių galimybių bei keliantis pavojingą priklausomybę. Melanžas vertinamas ir griežtai reguliuojamas išteklius. Arakio planetą valdo didikai Harkonenai, tačiau imperatorius atima iš jų valdžią ir ją perleidžia Atreidams. Tai gudri politinė machinacija, skirta ne kam kitam, o tiems patiems Atreidams sunaikinti. Planas beveik pavyksta, bet po Harkonenų keršto gyvi lieka hercogo Leto Atreido sūnus Polas ir jo motina ledi Džesika, kurie pabėga į kopas ir prisiglaudžia vietinių planetos gyventojų fremenų bendruomenėje. Polas neketina susitaikyti su likimu ir ruošiasi kovai su Harkonenais ir tais, kam jie atstovauja.
