Filmul ne poartă în interiorul unei școli americane, într-o zi care pare absolut obișnuită. Astfel, întâlnim tineri care învață, fac sport, bârfesc, se plâng de fel și fel de nimicuri sau socializează pur și simplu, iar prima impresie este aceea că e vorba doar despre rutina unei banale zile de școală. Regizorul Gus Van Sant revine la stilul minimalist al filmelor sale de început și oferă o explorare semi-improvizată a modului în care violența pătrunde într-un liceu american obișnuit. Eric și Alex sunt doi tineri neadaptați care învață la același liceu din Portland. Amândoi sunt fascinați de iconografia nazistă, joacă jocuri video violente, au tot felul de curiozități homoerotice, cumpără arme de pe internet și încep să facă planuri despre cum să provoace un atac armat asupra școlii.
