Kaede Honjou este invitată de prietena ei Risa Shiramine să joace împreună un MMO de realitate virtuală. Deși Kaede nu displace jocurile, ceea ce îi displace cu adevărat este să sufere. Creează un personaj numit Maple și decide să pună toate punctele în VIT pentru a minimiza durerea. Ca urmare, se mișcă încet, nu poate folosi magia, iar chiar și un iepure o poate învinge. Dar, după cum se dovedește, ea dobândește o abilitate cunoscută sub numele de "Absolute Defense" ca urmare a faptului că investește puncte în VIT, precum și o "Contra-abilitate" care funcționează împotriva mișcărilor speciale. Acum, cu abilitatea ei de a anula toate daunele, pornește în aventuri.
