Príbeh sa odohráva v dvoch časových obdobiach: rok 1910, Amiens, Francúzsko. Hlavný hrdina Stephen Wraysford sa nasťahuje ku svojmu zámožnému priateľovi Renému a jeho mladej manželke Isabelle. Tá je so svojím manželstvom nespokojná a jej náklonnosť k milému hosťovi časom prerastie vo vášnivý románik. Druhá časť začína v roku 1916, kedy sa Stephen ako poručík v armáde zúčastňuje krvavej bitky na Somme.
