Неухватљиви крадљивац драгуља сер Чарлс Литон алиас Фантом излуђује полицију широм света. Након што је извео последњу пљачку у Риму, оставивши у сефу уобичајени траг свог недела - рукавицу - сир Литон одлази у скијалиште Кортину Д'Ампеко где се одмара и принцеза Дала, власница непроцењивог ружичастог дијаманта званог Пинк Пантер. И док пучисти у њеној земљи захтевају повратак драгуља у домовину, сир Литон смишља како га се дочепати. Исто настоји и његов нећак плејбој Џорџ покушавајући да будућу пљачку припише тајанственом Фантому. Но међу лоповима се нађе и полицијски инспектор Жак Клузо из Париза, чији је задатак да уђе у траг Фантому и његовим евентуалним помагачима. Неспретни Клузо не зна да међународно траженом крадљивцу помаже његова лепа супруга Симон која је уједно и Фантомова љубавница...
