Dette er den pragtfulde skildring af et smuldrende adelsdynasti i 1860'ernes Sicilien, hvor Hollywood-stjernen Burt Lancaster helt uventet fik hovedrollen. Filmen blev en af sin tids dyreste produktioner, vandt Guldpalmen i Cannes og har inspireret filmskabere i et halvt århundrede. Francis Ford Coppolas bryllupsscene i The Godfather er som et direkte ekko fra Viscontis Leoparden, som her præsenteres i den remasterede originalversion.
