Hélène er lærer i en lille fransk by. Ved en bryllupsfest møder hun den kejtede slagter Popaul, der forelsker sig i hende. Ved første tilnærmelse afvises han dog venligt, men bestemt. Kort efter opskræmmes byen af et bestialsk seksualmord. Efterhånden bliver tiltrækningen mellem Hélène og Popaul gensidig, men samtidig er hun bange for, at han er den morder, som huserer på egnen.
